How do you advise patients with photosensitive epilepsy who are interested in blue lens therapy?

Although the effectiveness of cobalt blue lenses in reducing photoparoxysmal responses was demonstrated in Italian clinical trials several years ago, in my experience patients in the US have some difficulty finding or affording the exact tint described in the literature (Zeiss Z1). Furthermore there seems to be the occasional misunderstanding between a blue tinted lens and a blue light filtering lens.

  1. Has anyone had comparable success with similar (but not identical) blue tint?
  2. Do you recommend a "trial" of cheaper dark blue-tinted eyeglasses or sunglasses before spending a couple of hundred dollars on Zeiss Z1?
  3. Do you recommend the patient bring their lenses to a routine EEG to test effectiveness?
