What strategies do you find most effective in motivating patients with lupus nephritis to adhere to a challenging pill regimen?

• Measurement of drug levels such as hydroxychloroquine as a marker of adherence
• Emphasizing the benefits of treatment including the concept of preserved kidney function
• Utilizing a pill packaging service such as PillPack
• Emphasizing the goal of decreased steroid burden that can be achieved through good disease control
• Emphasizing the risks of inadequate treatment such as progression of CKD or eventual ESKD and need for renal replacement therapy
• I do not generally attempt a regimen that requires a high pill count
• I always offer the patient alternative regimens that would require a lower daily pill count
