What is your treatment approach for intrathoracic esophageal cancers with cervical lymph node metastases?
In AJCC 6th edition, cervical LNs for intrathoracic esophageal cancers are considered M1a disease. In AJCC 7th edition, cervical LNs are considered regional regardless of location of the esophageal primary. CALGB 80803 allows enrollment of patients with cervical LN metastases if they are included in the RT field or resected at time of esophagectomy. Is curative intervention for these patients recommended?
