Based upon recently published information in the journal Science, would you offer zileuton to a high-risk food allergy patient who declines oral immunotherapy and omalizumab?

It was recently reported in the journal Science (Hoyt et al., PMID 40773557) that the asthma drug zileuton blocks the pathway of DPEP1, a gene that is essential in regulating anaphylaxis. In their study, scientists nearly eliminated allergic responses in mice that were previously highly susceptible to food-induced anaphylaxis.

No. This suggestion is based on mice models where one dose eliminated allergic responses to foods like peanuts and eggs. I am not aware of any clinical data on this subject. The mouse data is interesting, but many exciting discoveries in mice have failed in human trials.

One would think there would have at least been case reports of food allergic patients, on zileuton for their asthma, who noted they were spared anaph...
